Fees: Computation of legal fees in Uganda
is generally governed by the Advocates Act, cap
267 Laws of Uganda 2000 Edition and the Advocates
(Remuneration & Taxation of Costs) Rules, 1982,
as amended by Statutory Instrument no.3 of 1996
("the Rules"). The Rules particularly
spell out the scales of charges or provide guidelines
for computing fees for various legal instructions.
However, the Advocates Act also allows lawyers to
agree on appropriate fees with their clients.
This can be on a retainer
basis or other mutual agreement. On most occasions,
we have agreed the fees with clients. The firm normally
recommends computation of fees by agreement with
the client.
Where the
client opts for time billing, the firm will prepare
an accurate time-billing schedule based on input-hours.
Fees are charged on an hourly rate of between
US$ 150 to US$ 250 per hour depending on the level
of seniority of the Legal Associate, Advocate,
Consultant or Partner engaged in the execution
of the client's instructions. Disbursements are
charged on the client.
The firm may offer discounts
on professional fees.
Invoices for legal fees are
usually paid by cheque, bankers draft or by electronic
transfer. Upon the receipt of instructions a deposit
of at least 40% of the fees is encouraged. Invoices
are payable within 30 days
